Monique Buzzarté

Monique Buzzarté, trombonist/composer, is an avid proponent of contemporary music. She has commissioned and premiered many new pieces in addition to composing her own solo, chamber, and electronic works for a variety of forces. She performs as Zanana, a collaborative duo with soprano Kristin Norderval that blends acoustic sounds, electronics and live processing and also as part of the New Circle Five with Pauline Oliveros.

In recognition of her long history in supporting the creation of new works Meet the Composer recently selected Ms. Buzzarté for their new "Soloist Champions" program. She received a 2007 Artist in Residency at Harvestworks for the creation of a new surround sound composition, and was awarded a 2006 Jack Straw Productions Artist Support grant for a recording of her works. Recordings include Zanana's Holding Patterns (Deep Listening 30), John Cage's Five3 with the Arditti Quartet (Mode 75: John CAGE: Vol. 19 - The Number Pieces 2), and Dreaming Wide Awake with the New Circle Five (Deep Listening 20). Ms. Buzzarté developed a unique interactive performance interface for the trombone, supported in part through artist residencies in 2003 at Create@iEAR Studios and in 2002 at Harvestworks.

An author, activist, and educator as well as a performer/composer, she has published research on the brass music of women composers and coordinated advocacy campaigns for women in music, including efforts that led to the admission of women members into the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in 1997. Ms. Buzzarté is certified to teach the meditative improvisation practices of Deep Listening.
