Open Source
The Open Source Series is suddenlyLISTEN’s showcase for local artists collaborating together, and with touring artists from across the Canada. This is a great chance for audience members to get a cheap ticket that gives an unprecedented up-close view of the music and musicians. Open Source is more than just a few concerts: it offers local developing, and veteran performers, often participants from the sL Improv Workshop, a place to try out their latest work in front of an audience; it is a home for touring creative musicians on the Circuit program a venue to play in Halifax; OS offers a low cost, grassroots musical experience for audiences; and it supports the improvised music scene in Halifax by bringing artists together to hear the work of others, and collaborate together.
In 2009 suddenlyLISTEN was invited to be part of Circuit, a network of concert venues and presenters of creative music from cities across Canada (Halifax, Fredericton, Rimouski, Montreal, Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver). This network provides improvisers with touring support from the Canada Council for the Arts a circuit of concerts to play solo and in collaboration with local musicians. These concerts are curated on a shorter lead-time than Main Series shows, so joining the suddenlyLISTEN mailing list here and watching the suddenlyLISTEN website for emerging details is recommended!
This season will present JP Carter a trumpet/electronics wizard from Vancouver on September 26. More concerts will be added to Open Source as the season develops, so stay tuned in!
Other concerts are planned that suddenlyLISTEN is co–presenting, including a double bill with Jerry Granellis’ 3 Form and Dragos/Diatribes a trio of bass and percussion and electronic musicians from Switzerland October 8th. October 13th The Lina Allemano 4 from Toronto tour through. All these concerts are held at 1313 Hollis.
If you are an artist interested in taking part in a Circuit tour, please contact us for more information on how to apply.
Open Source shows are held at 1313 Hollis Street, and tickets are a mere $10 for adults and $5 for students and artists.
