"Collateral was born from a suddenlyLISTEN concert in 2014. I had invited Sam Shalabi to Halifax, because of his connections to Egypt and a desire to expand the series beyond just European sounds. On the ride from the airport, he told me he had grown up entirely on Prince Edward Island, and my curatorial world was shattered…. But, it wasn’t of course. Sam brings a completely personal sound to everything he touches! Those sounds are born of late 70's Island punk rock, Arab Spring period Cairo, and of course, his many years in the rich music scenes of Montréal. Collateral crams Tim’s jazz tinged, and my unavoidably classical extended sounds, with Sam’s jagged, tonally rich North African language. It’s a collision and a blend! And it’s really fun to listen to."
