About the Event
“I have nothing to say and I’m saying it.” – John Cage
Do you want to strip bare your creative process? Sure you do!
Do you want to take all your ego out of your art? Of course you do!
Do you want to leave your sounds, words, images, and movements up to chance? Yup, you do!
Join percussionist D’Arcy Gray and dancer Jacinte Armstrong for an experimental, playful workshop diving into the ideas and methods of John Cage, the legendary composer who turned silence into music and randomness into structure.
Through guided activities and improvisations, participants will explore the hallmarks of Cage’s work: chance operations, indeterminacy, deep listening, and the radical act of paying attention.
Bring a musical instrument, your body, or art materials to create with — plus a pencil and paper. No experience necessary, just a sense of curiosity and a willingness to experiment.
Maybe you’ll even find a path to enlightenment. (Though, as Cage once said, “Now that I’m enlightened, I’m just as miserable as ever.”)
Facilitated by D’Arcy Gray with Jacinte Armstrong
