About the Event

suddenlyLISTEN presents Weston Olencki and Strata in concert! These three artists use unusual (and more common) tools to make sound. The results are music and sonic textures that transport our imaginations out to new worlds and back. Be ready to open your ears and minds to take a journey as seemingly random occurrences and regular pulsations coalesce to create the most beautiful and evocative results.

The concert will open with micro sound duo Strata, followed by a solo performance by composer and instrument builder Weston Olencki.

Admission is free.

Weston Olencki is a Berlin-based musician whose work is focused on sonic materialism and the embedded, multilayered histories of instrumental music. They will present new material from an upcoming LP entitled "all my father's clocks", for extended autoharp, electronics, vibration motors, bells, and an array of chime mechanisms salvaged from grandfather clocks. The work weaves together autobiographical references to familial ties, nostalgia, time, and their experiences growing up in and working in the American South.

Strata is Brandon Auger and Norm Adams, a Halifax duo of sound artists meeting in the fissure between music and noise. Strata combines cello, objects, modular synthesis, and processing to communicate a rare language formed from texture, pitch, scratch and hum. The message is listening and cooperation, while the negotiation is complex and very human.
