About the Event
From Phillip:
This is a workshop I've been presenting over the past few decades, where I share ideas that have inspired me to create original compositions that combine elements of graphic scores, text scores, game strategies, traditional music notation, and more. The two bodies of work that best represent this activity are my MAP SCORES and BARBEDWIRE 37 graphic scores for trio.

Part 1: We will begin by looking at a few models by Anthony Braxton and Pauline Oliveros that helped to inspire these works, with the focus of developing your own catalog of sound language. You can think of this as creating a list of ingredients that will inspire a recipe for improvising.
Part 2: We will continue by performing some of the scores mentioned above, which can offer a springboard for free improvisation, or for your own original compositions.
Part 3: We conclude by exploring how multiple scores can be combined in performance with conduction traditions.
This workshop is ideal for anyone who wants to learn more about how to develop their skills/voice as improvisers or composers, and is suitable for all levels of musicianship.
I encourage an open and supportive environment for all participants and endeavor to instill joy in the process of our collective musical development.
